In August 2020, when registration of Sergei Tikhonovsky as a candidate was refused by CEC, Svetlana decided to come forward as a candidate for the presidential election. Pickets to collect signatures congregate a huge number of people creating long queues in Minsk and other cities. During her election campaign, she received anonymous calls threatening her children, but continued to struggle. On July 14, the CEC registered Svetlana as a presidential candidate, after which representatives of Tikhanovsky's, Viktor Babaryka's, and Valery Tsapkalo's headquarters agreed to unite and set common goals. Official pickets gathered tens of thousands of people. Elections took place on August 9. According to official data, Svetlana collect 10% of votes, but did not agree with this result and filed a complaint to the Central Election Commission, where a long conversation took place, after which Svetlana was taken out of the country.

Now she is in Lithuania, where continues her political activities against the Lukashenka regime.

BY 'When they came to you', as well as a special project dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the tragedy in Nemiga. In one of her articles, she wrote about the events of the evening of November 11 in the Square of Change, when Raman Bondarenko was beaten, talked to witnesses, kept in touch with the relatives of the deceased. Katsyaryna was the author of the article stating that there was no alcohol in Roman's blood. On November 19, 2020, unknown people took her to the KGB detention center. The Prosecutor General's Office opened a criminal case on the fact of disclosure of medical secrets, which led to serious consequences. Sentenced to 6 months in prison.
