On January 14, the famous Belarusian artist Leonid Shemelev has gone. He was 98 years old.
'My paintings are my diaries', — said the artist, so the main subjects of his paintings — the Great Patriotic War, historical figures, cultural figures, landscapes. All his artworks are made in a free plastic manner with the use of light and shadow effects, lack of detail, expressiveness.
Leonid Shemelev (January 1923-14, 2021) is a famous Belarusian artist from Vitebsk.
At the age of 19, he got to the front, was severely wounded.
After the War he entered the Minsk Art School, then studied at the Belarusian Theater and Art Institute (now the Belarusian State Academy of Arts).
Shemelev's artworks are displayed at the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus, the Museum of Modern Art and the Zhilbel Art Center in Minsk.
Leonid Shemelev's art gallery has been operating in Minsk since 2003.
